ANDM capable of repeating history by defeating poverty: Demeke
(EBC, 02 November 2015) - The Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) is capable of repeating the victory gained over the Derg regime by defeating poverty, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen said.
Demeke, who is also Chairperson of ANDM, made the remark on Saturday at a workshop organized in connection with the Movement's 35th founding anniversary.
Scholars drawn from the Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Civil Service University took part in the workshop held at AAU.
ANDM, in partnership with the public, will work to address problems that arise in connection with good governance, corruption and rent seeking, Demeke said at the workshop.
The Movement is capable of repeating history by taking the leading role in the war which the country waged against poverty and defeating it, he said.
Founder and veteran fighter of ANDM, Bereket Simon, presented a research paper focusing on the founding of ANDM/the Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (EPDM) and Amhara democratic nationalism.
The Amhara people have contributed a lot in the struggle to oust the Derg regime as well as other organizations to emerge, he said, citing the Oromo People Democratic Organization (OPDO) and the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (SEPDM) as cases in point.
He said the Movement had faced challenges to ensure today's democracy and development in the state and the country in general.
ANDM, founded by about 38 fighters 35 years ago, has been doing its level best right from its inception until now in collaboration with other nations, nationalities and people's of Ethiopia, he added.
Various political parties had failed to attain their objectives for various reasons but ANDM and other few parties managed to sustain their journey and realize their dreams despite various challenges, he said.
The present development endeavors in various sectors were the outcome of the bitter struggles waged by EPRDF, he stated.
ANDM contributed its share for the double-digit economic growth registered for more than a decade, he said.
Thus, to sustain development and ensure justice and equality between nations and nationalities, it is crucial to strengthen democratic nationalism within the people of the state and among others, he underlined.
The 35th founding anniversary of ANDM is being celebrated with a variety of proceedings and celebrations.
The closing ceremony will be held in Bahirdar town, Amhara Regional State, on November 18, 2015.
