AU condemns attack by South Sudanese gunmen in Gambela

(EBC; April 18, 2016) - The African Union Commission has "condemned in the strongest terms the criminal attack carried out by South Sudanese armed elements in the Jakawa area of the Gambella region".

The South Sudanese gunmen group killed 208 people and abducted 102 women and children on 15 April 2016.

Chairperson of the AU Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, expressed AU's heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

Zuma assured the government and people of Ethiopia of the AU's full solidarity and support in these difficult circumstances.

She also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the women and children abducted from the region.

According to the press release of the AUC, the commission looks forward to joint efforts by the governments of South Sudan and Ethiopia to bring to justice those who committed the despicable act.
