Ethiopia committed to implementation of AU’s institutional reform - Dr. Workneh

(EBC; September 12, 2018) - The Sixth retreat of the Executive Council of the African Union on the reform of the AU Commission kicked off in Addis Ababa yesterday.

In his opening remarks, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Workneh  said  “We need a better governed, more accountable, high performing and efficient Commission that can deliver the concrete results on priorities outlined in Agenda 2063” for Africa to achieve the Pan-African vision.

The AU Commission has continued to face limitations that include weak accountability and management, poor delineation of roles and responsibilities, weak performance management and the lack of any clear delegation of authorities, he added

Dr. Workneh stressed that the purpose of the reform is to make the AU Commission fit for the purpose of achieving the objectives and priorities outlined in Agenda 2063.

He said the 6th Retreat will allow member countries to make important contributions and hold consultations to speed up implementation of the reform.

Dr. Workneh reiterated Ethiopia’s firm commitment to the implementation of the AU institutional reform.
