Tanzanian president cautions on East Africa's sugar imports
(EBC; August 10, 2018) - Tanzanian President John Magufuli has urged regional leaders to guard against excessive sugar imports in the East African region.
The president warned that imports were killing local industries and stifling employment opportunities.
Magufuli sounded the caution while meeting visiting Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Dar es Salaam of Tanzania, states the state’s House statement.
The statement further calls East African leaders have to must tackle the issue of illicit sugar and smuggling.
“We should decide whether we need to grow our industries or becoming dumping grounds," the president added.
