In a promising development for Ethiopia's economy, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) announced that over 815.6 tons of tea have been exported to the global market in the past nine months of the current fiscal year. This marks a notable increase of 204 tons compared to the same period last year, showcasing a significant uptick in the country's tea export volume.
ECTA Deputy Director-General Shafi Umer disclosed to EPA the impressive performance, stating that Ethiopia has secured 1.67 million USD from tea exports during the reported period. Despite the limited number of actors in the tea production sector, with only East Africa PLC and Gumero currently active, efforts are underway to diversify and expand the industry.
The Gambella Tea Farming Industry is a focal point for the authority, which is striving to make it operational and boost productivity in the sector. Additionally, initiatives are in place to enhance tea plantation cultivation in regions like Jimma, Ilubabor, and Buno Bedelle. Collaborative efforts with regional authorities, such as the Oromia State President’s Office and Oromia Agriculture Bureau, aim to promote tea farming activities and support farming communities in areas like South West Ethiopia State.
Moreover, beyond the tangible economic gains, coffee exhibitions have emerged as key platforms for business networking and industry growth. February of this year saw approximately 1,000 international coffee buyers attending these exhibitions, with leading firms from the U.S., Europe, and other parts of the world participating. Notably, the ECTA secured a two million USD coffee contractual agreement during these events.
The exhibitions not only facilitate trade but also serve as showcases for Ethiopia's rich coffee plantations and production processes. They foster cultural exchange and provide opportunities for stakeholders to engage directly with the sector.
