The Ministry of Agriculture announced that it has been possible to integrate close to 2 million households into urban agriculture in all cities across the country over the past nine months.
Sileshi Bekele, Lead Executive for Urban Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated during his stay with ETV's Dagu program that numerous benefits are currently being gained from urban agriculture.
Sileshi also highlighted that urban agriculture is not only increasing the economic benefits for residents engaged in the sector but is also enabling them to access nutritious food.
The Lead Executive noted that urban agriculture has its own characteristics that distinguish it from rural agriculture, explaining that it allows for the integration of various agricultural sectors and implementation in small spaces.
He stated that significant changes are occurring at the community and family levels through urban agriculture and added that the cities' corridor development work is also being carried out in an environmentally friendly manner.
He also mentioned that the Ministry of Agriculture has carried out various capacity-building activities over the past two years to establish and implement a system for urban agriculture.
The urban agriculture being implemented in cities includes animal, plant, and natural resource sectors.
