The Addis Ababa City Administration plans to construct 2,500 homes through its ambitious summer volunteer program in the upcoming 2017 Ethiopian calendar year (2024/2025 Gregorian calendar). Mayor Adanech Abiebie unveiled the initiative today at the program's official opening ceremony.
Mayor Adanech underscored the importance of volunteering, stating, "Volunteerism is a commendable activity that must continue to be a cultural norm." She highlighted the sustained volunteer efforts throughout the years of reform, which have successfully mobilized various community groups and investors. This year, she affirmed, will see a renewed focus on numerous people-centered projects.

The comprehensive program outlines 18 distinct volunteer activities, with the flagship project being the rapid construction of 2,500 homes within a 90-day timeframe.
In addition to the housing initiative, the city administration also aims to provide meals to a significant portion of its population, with plans to repeatedly share food with approximately 500,000 city residents, FBC reported.
