Media Experts Urge Responsible Reporting For Lasting Peace

In a recent discussion hosted by Ethiopian Television (ETV), media experts emphasized the crucial role of responsible reporting in fostering lasting peace and unity within the country. The conversation, featuring prominent figures in journalism and communication, highlighted the need for media professionals to consider the potential impact of their work on public perception and societal stability.

Yohannes Shiferaw (PhD), a professor of journalism and communication at Addis Ababa University, underscored the media's significant influence on nation-building. "Media professionals must think critically about how their reporting affects the public," he stated, urging journalists to recognize their responsibility in shaping narratives that promote unity rather than division.

He stressed that the information conveyed through media channels reaches vast audiences, making it imperative to prioritize accuracy and balance in reporting.

Teshale Tegene (PhD), a lecturer and researcher at Wolaita Sodo University, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the media holds the potential to drive meaningful change in society.

He pointed out that the media's mission extends beyond mere reporting; it is about creating an informed society that contributes to peace and democratic governance. "By pre-screening information and presenting it thoughtfully, media outlets can play a pivotal role in enhancing stability in Ethiopia," he noted.

The experts also discussed the importance of understanding community dynamics and respecting diverse opinions. They argued that reports addressing the root causes of societal issues can help mitigate grievances and foster dialogue among different groups. "The media has a responsibility to guide the next generation by providing constructive narratives," Dr. Teshale added.

However, both experts cautioned against the unchecked influence of social media, which can exacerbate tensions if not monitored effectively.

They called for proactive measures to educate the public on identifying harmful content and understanding the legal implications of misinformation.
