Grenade attack hits police camp in Oromia

A grenade attack targeting a police camp in Burayu town, in Oromia Special Zone, some 20 kilometers North West of Addis Ababa, has left nine people injured, The Reporter has learnt.

According to a statement issued by Oromia Communication Bureau, the incident happened around 7:30 PM on September 12, 2019.The attack left the nine individuals, among whom some were police officers, with minor injuries, the statement indicated.

Following the incident, the victims were rushed to a hospital and some are reported be receiving treatments.

The government of the Oromia Regional State, just hours after the official announcement of the incident via its communication Bureau, has said that it has arrested suspected individuals in connection to the attack.

Twenty individuals suspected of being a member or having an association with a group called Shene have been arrested, suspected of having a connection with the grenade attack.

So far, no details have been disclosed by the government regarding the motives behind the attack.

Tragically, this is not the first time where Burayu has witnessed such tragic incidents.

Back in September, 2018, the town saw one of the deadliest ethnically motivated killings targeting civilians. Mainly, ethnic minority groups were targeted where more than two dozens of civilians were believed to have lost their lives. In addition, properties and businesses which belonged to the residents of Burayu towns were looted, damaged and ransacked.

Following the incident, thousands of victims were displaced, with most fleeing to the capital.

It can be recalled that the violence last year had escalated after a rally marking the return of leaders of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), after decades in exile.
