US Backs Ethiopia's Bid To Join World Trade Organization

The United States has pledged its support for the Ethiopia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This commitment emerged from a meeting between Ethiopian Undersecretary of State for Finance, Eyob Tekalegn (PhD), and Neil J. Beck, Assistant Secretary of State for the World Trade Organization and Multilateral Affairs at the US Department of Commerce, during the 2025 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings.

Eyob outlined Ethiopia's ongoing efforts to meet WTO accession requirements, emphasizing the country's commitment to fulfilling these obligations by the next WTO meeting in March.

Beck commended Ethiopia's progress, stating that the country's efforts "are commendable."

He further affirmed the US position, declaring, “The United States supports Ethiopia's accession to the World Trade Organization, and reiterates its interest in Ethiopia's successful integration into the global trading system."

This endorsement comes at a crucial time for Ethiopia, as it seeks to deepen its engagement with the global economy and attract foreign investment.

WTO membership would provide Ethiopia with increased access to international markets, enhanced trade rules predictability, and a platform for resolving trade disputes.

The US backing signifies not only support for Ethiopia's economic development but also a potential strengthening of bilateral ties.

Both parties have agreed to continue collaborating and reinforcing their partnership as Ethiopia advances toward WTO membership.

This cooperative approach suggests a shared interest in facilitating Ethiopia's seamless integration into the global trading system, potentially opening new avenues for economic growth and development.

The upcoming March meeting will be a key test of Ethiopia's readiness and a critical step towards realizing its WTO ambitions.
