Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) announced today that the nation's hydropower dams are holding sufficient water levels to meet the planned power generation targets for the current budget year. This assurance comes as a significant boost for Ethiopia's energy sector.
Fisseha Getachew, Public Relations and Communication Manager at EEP, confirmed that 14 key hydropower dams have adequate water reserves to achieve their power generation goals through June 30, 2025.
Among the dams confirmed to be holding their expected capacities are major facilities like Gibe III, Beles, Genale Dawa III, Tekeze, Gilgel Gibe I, Fincha, Melka Wakena, Neshe, Tis Abay I, and Koka. These critical assets are well-positioned to continue supplying electricity across the country.
EEP also detailed the impressive capacities of these dams, which range from 74,500 to 448 million cubic meters of water. Fisseha further clarified that some power plants, such as Gibe II, Tis Abay II, and Awash II and III, do not have their own independent dams but rather utilize water from interconnected systems like Gibe I, Lake Tana, and Koka, respectively, FBC reported.
