PM Abiy Launches Model Village Construction as Rural Corridor Initiative Broadens Across Ethiopia

Ethiopia's nationwide effort to uplift rural communities gained significant momentum today as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for new model rural villages. This latest development marks a key expansion of the country's ambitious rural corridors initiative.

The Prime Minister was present in Sinbita Kebele, Wera Dijo Woreda, within the Halaba Zone of the Central Ethiopia Region, as construction commenced on the first of these innovative settlements. Designed to be low-cost and built sustainably from locally available resources, these model villages aim to provide farmers with the foundational infrastructure necessary for healthy and dignified lives.

Beyond the village construction, the broader rural corridor initiative is already yielding tangible results in the immediate vicinity. Over 2,000 hectares of land are currently under irrigation, fostering a surge in agricultural output. Local farmers are actively engaged in the multiplication of high-quality maize seeds, alongside the cultivation of diverse vegetables and fruits. This strategic transformation is steadily converting a region historically plagued by both floods and droughts into a vibrant example of sustainable development and agricultural resilience.
