Ethiopian Education Minister Declares End to "Effortless Passing" as National Exams Approach

Ethiopian students will no longer be able to pass national examinations without genuine study and comprehension, Education Minister Professor Berhanu Nega declared. This significant shift marks a new era in the nation's educational landscape, prompting a concentrated effort from the broader academic community to genuinely empower students.

Professor Berhanu, speaking to ETV 57 news regarding the upcoming Grade 12 national examination preparations, confirmed that extensive measures are in place to administer the nationwide test without any hitches. He emphasized the country's readiness to conduct the exams seamlessly, both on paper and online, adding that over 28,000 invigilators have been recruited to ensure a smooth process.

The minister recalled past interventions where schools with historically low pass rates received targeted attention and remedial classes. He expressed optimism that these institutions are now poised to achieve improved results in this year's exams.

Highlighting the increasing role of technology, Professor Berhanu also noted that 150,000 students preparing for the online national exam are currently undergoing essential practice sessions. He conveyed strong confidence that both diligent students and well-prepared schools will achieve excellent outcomes.

To preempt potential disruptions such as internet and power outages or other logistical challenges during the examination period, a dedicated task force, comprising representatives from 10 different institutions, has been established and is actively working to ensure stability, the minister confirmed.
