The Amhara Regional State has channeled over 1.34 billion Birr towards the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) over the past 14 years. This significant financial commitment was underscored today during a special recognition program held to express gratitude for the region's enduring support to the national mega-project.
Deputy Chief Administrator Dr. Abdu Hussein, addressing attendees at the appreciation ceremony, hailed the GERD as a powerful symbol of Ethiopian unity and the realization of a collective "can-do" spirit. He specifically acknowledged the prominent and unwavering participation of the Amhara people in the dam's development, through financial contributions, labor, and various other forms of assistance since its groundbreaking.
Dr. Abdu affirmed the region's continued dedication, stating that the population will intensify its support until the dam's final completion. He particularly emphasized the crucial responsibility of preventing siltation in the dam, urging ongoing efforts from the community.
Abayneh Getu, Head of the GERD Amhara Regional Coordination Branch Office, provided detailed figures. He confirmed the 1.34 billion Birr contribution over 14 years, which includes bond purchases. Abayneh further revealed that over 90 million Birr has been collected in the current Ethiopian budget year alone, demonstrating sustained commitment.
Beyond financial pledges, Abayneh highlighted an estimated 40 billion Birr in labor contributions from farmers over the years, specifically dedicated to anti-siltation efforts. He concluded by calling for continued and strengthened support until the dam reaches its full operational capacity.
