Ethiopia's groundbreaking Green Legacy Initiative has positioned the nation as a leading example for countries worldwide in combating environmental degradation, according to Kebede Yimam, Director General of Ethiopian Forest Development.
Kebede underscored the critical need for governmental action against the adverse impacts of land degradation and climate change on ecosystems. He highlighted that numerous annual studies consistently provide extensive data emphasizing the severity of these environmental challenges.
"Ethiopia's focused attention on these issues, particularly through the Green Legacy Initiative, has allowed us to become a model for many nations," kebede stated in an interview with ETV.
He further noted the significant progress achieved through the initiative, revealing that the government's approval of a fund dedicated to rehabilitating degraded areas has successfully reduced deforestation to 27,000 hectares.
The director general affirmed that the Green Legacy Initiative is yielding "unprecedented and superior results," consistently achieving remarkable transformations. He also pointed out a continuous improvement in the annual cultivation of indigenous tree seedlings, with a strong emphasis on preserving native species.
