The Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, Demelash GebreMichael, stated that the Federal Police has been able to improve the effectiveness of crime prevention and investigation services by utilizing technologies.
The House of People's Representatives' Standing Committee on Law and Justice has reviewed the nine-month performance report of the Ethiopian Federal Police for the current budget year.
During his presentation of the institution's performance, Commissioner General Demelash GebreMichael mentioned that the reform work undertaken at the institution, following scientific approaches, has been effective. He added that training and communication platforms were held to ensure that the leadership understood and implemented the reform down to the lower levels.
Based on the report presented, members of the Standing Committee raised various questions and requested clarification.
In response regarding the investigation of financial crimes, it was mentioned that special attention has been given to technology-based crimes such as mobile banking fraud, and as a result, over 80 suspected criminals have been apprehended and are currently under investigation.
It was also stated that integrated work has been done to curb anti-peace forces in a coordinated manner by occupying key locations on the main routes used for import and export trade, ensuring that deployments are not disrupted and that citizens can move in and out safely.
Isa Boru, Deputy Chairperson of the House of People's Representatives' Standing Committee on Law and Justice Affairs, stated that the reduction in the frequency of conflicts was due to the integrated and strong work carried out by the Federal Police.
Regarding illegal human trafficking, Isa emphasized that the Commission should focus on prevention beforehand and work more closely with the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice in a coordinated manner.
Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Isa Boru, stated that they recognize the sacrifices the police force is making, including risking their lives, living for the people above themselves, to ensure the rule of law by preventing crime.
