Julius W. Garvey Pays Courtesy Visit to Adwa Memorial Museum

While celebrating Adwa, we should always pay tribute to the well-disciplined and massive Ethiopian army, who did the unthinkable by routing an invading Italian force and bringing Italy's war of conquest in Africa to an end.

The remark was made by Julius W. Garvey (PhD), son of Marcus Garvey - the preeminent activist of 20th century Black struggle for freedom –upon his visit to the newly-constructed Adwa Memorial Museum in the heart of Addis Ababa.

Garvey said the unforgettable event opened a breach that would lead, in the aftermath of world war fifty years later, to the continent's painful struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

Compared to their well-resourced opponent, the victory of Africans against a colonial force became a symbol of Black freedom on the continent and globally, according to Garvey, who earlier conferred with Taye Asqesilassie, Ethiopian Foreign Minister.

Garvey lauded the historical museum in the center of Piazza, Addis Ababa, as a project that honors the sacrifices made during the Battle of Adwa.//
