Aug 22, 2025

The Ethiopian Roads Administration (ERA) announced the successful completion of 535 km of new and express roads during the past fiscal year. The announcement highlights successful efforts in the country's road construction sector.

Asrat Asale, the acting Communication Director for the ERA, stated that the work was carried out under six distinct road development programs. He emphasized that the construction of new district-level roads has significantly expanded the nation's overall road network.

In addition to the new construction, the administration also rehabilitated and upgraded 339 km of existing roads. Maintenance efforts were also extensive, with 11,831 km of roads undergoing various types of maintenance, including heavy, routine, and periodic repairs.

The ERA's report also detailed significant progress in bridge construction and repair. Over the past year, 125 new bridges were built, and 83 existing bridges were repaired.

The completed road projects represent a substantial investment, with 94.4 billion birr spent during the last fiscal year. Looking ahead, the administration has already allocated 89.13 billion birr for 351 projects planned for the current fiscal year. The ambitious goal is to complete 1,256.3 km of new road construction and heavy maintenance. Furthermore, the road fund is set to support the maintenance of another 15,645 km of roads, ENA reported.
