South African Teenager Develops Discreet Safety Device Disguised as Jewelry

Mar 13, 2026 31

Bohlale Mphahlele, an innovator from Limpopo, South Africa, has designed a sophisticated safety tool known as the "Alerting Earpiece." Developed when she was 16, the device is cleverly disguised as a standard earring to provide users with a discreet way to seek assistance during an emergency.

The wearable is engineered to capture a photograph of an assailant, broadcast the user's live GPS coordinates, and notify emergency services and personal contacts within seconds. Mphahlele is currently focused on refining the prototype for commercial production, with the aim of reducing response times and ensuring investigators have access to reliable evidence.
