Surgeons at Mudula Hospital, located in the Tembaro Special Wereda of the Central Ethiopia Regional State, have successfully removed a 10-kilogram tumor from a 34-year-old patient, marking a significant medical milestone for the facility.
The patient, Adanech Elsebo, a local resident, had lived with the growth on her back for the past decade. The debilitating condition had prevented her from sleeping on her back or engaging in regular work for ten years.
Speaking to Ethiopia Radio, Dr. Yosef Tafese, the General Surgery Specialist who led the operation, confirmed that a team of eight medical professionals successfully completed the complex procedure in three hours. Dr. Yosef reported that the patient is currently in good health and recovering well.
The specialist explained that such tumors typically occur when natural body fat deposits grow abnormally over time.
While Mudula Hospital has been providing healthcare services since 2016 (2008 E.C.), Hospital Manager Amare Beyene noted that this is the first time the facility has performed a surgery of this magnitude. He added that because the patient is a beneficiary of the Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) scheme, she was able to receive the life-changing treatment at a minimal cost.
