Tech Boosts Revenue, Eases Burden For Ethiopian Taxpayers

Aug 29, 2025

Ethiopian taxpayers are breathing a collective sigh of relief as digital technology streamlines revenue collection, enhancing efficiency and reducing hassles, according to the Ministry of Revenue.

The modernisation effort is not only benefiting citizens but also significantly bolstering the country’s burgeoning digital economy.

The digital transformation of the tax payment system, initially implemented in the 2017 fiscal year, has yielded impressive results.

Citizens are experiencing reduced processing times and greater convenience when fulfilling their tax obligations.

Instead of lengthy waits and complex procedures, they can now manage their taxes with relative ease, thanks to the digital infrastructure, according to the Ministry.

Revenue collection institutions confirm that this technological leap has been instrumental in better serving their clientele. By leveraging digital solutions, these institutions are more effectively meeting the evolving needs of taxpayers in a dynamic economic environment.

Branch offices of the Ministry of Revenue are now equipped to offer a range of digital services, enabling taxpayers to make payments remotely and address grievances swiftly. This enhanced accessibility is transforming the relationship between taxpayers and the government, fostering greater trust and transparency.

Zeleke Jambo, Director General of the High Taxpayers' Branch Office at the Ministry of Revenue, emphasised the positive impact of these changes.

He reported that digital technology has not only met the needs of taxpayers but has also fostered a stronger, more reliable working relationship between the office and the public.

Zeleke stated that it "creates a great opportunity to work more closely and confidently." The digital platform allows for efficient communication, data sharing and problem solving, he explained.

The investment in digital infrastructure underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and improving citizen services.

The success of this initiative sets a precedent for further digitalisation across other sectors, solidifying Ethiopia’s position in the global digital landscape. With continued innovation and strategic implementation, digital technology promises to be a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s future prosperity.
