Ethiopia’s GERD: A History of Leadership, Unity

Sep 02, 2025

In a moment of historical reflection, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed publicly thanked all who contributed to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), acknowledging a chain of leadership and unity that made the project a reality.

The Prime Minister gave special credit to the late former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, praising his foresight in launching the project. According to Abiy, Meles's decision to begin construction was a commendable act of leadership, demonstrating a clear understanding of both the region’s complex geopolitical landscape and Ethiopia’s economic needs.

PM Abiy also extended his gratitude to former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who assumed leadership after Meles's passing. He noted that Hailemariam's contributions were instrumental in keeping the project on track and ensuring its continued progress.

Beyond the political sphere, the Prime Minister highlighted the crucial role played by a broader spectrum of society. He praised the journalists who tirelessly advocated for the dam, the diplomats who represented the nation on the world stage, and all Ethiopians who contributed their time and resources. The GERD, he stated, is a testament to the unwavering collective effort of the entire nation.
