GERD Coordination Office, Ethio Telecom Launch Digital Platform for Victory Messages

Sep 02, 2025

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Coordination Office, in collaboration with Ethio Telecom, has unveiled a new digital platform for Ethiopians to share in the victory of the dam's completion. A new short message service (SMS) number, 8120, has been launched, allowing citizens to send messages of well-wishes and support.

The initiative also provides a unique opportunity for citizens to contribute financially to the GERD project. By sending a specific numerical code to 8120, users can donate varying amounts:

1 for “We have succeeded together” — a 5 Birr donation

2 for “GERD is the mark of our prosperity” — a 10 Birr donation

3 for “Our dam is the crown of our victory” — a 15 Birr donation

4 for “Our dam is the banner of the struggle of the Nile generation” — a 100 Birr donation

Alternatively, citizens can send their own personalized message and make a 20 Birr donation. The GERD Coordination Office is encouraging the public to participate and "make their victory messages part of history."

During a ceremony to launch the new platform, the GERD Coordination Office extended its gratitude to Ethio Telecom for its "invaluable contribution to the dam's realization." The event was attended by members of the GERD Council and other distinguished guests.

It was also noted that this is not the first collaboration between the two entities, as a similar fundraising effort was previously conducted using the digital platform 8100.

The new campaign is scheduled to run from today until October 10, 2025.
