Diaspora's Unwavering Support Secured Renaissance Dam Triumph, Official States

Sep 02, 2025

The Ethiopian diaspora’s relentless advocacy and support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) proved instrumental in overcoming regional disputes and securing its successful completion, according to Ambassador Fitsum Arega, Director General of the Ethiopian Diaspora Service. Speaking in an interview, Ambassador Fitsum lauded the diaspora's unwavering commitment over the past 14 years, highlighting their crucial role as ambassadors for the project on a global scale.

"The work the diaspora has done around the world as an ambassador for the Renaissance Dam for the past 14 years has been outstanding," Ambassador Fitsum asserted.

He emphasised their unity, both financially and in providing essential support, in the face of threats and intimidation originating from various corners of the globe.

The Director General praised the diaspora's unwavering determination as truly admirable.

Since its inception, the GERD has faced regional concerns and disagreements. Ambassador Fitsum recalled the remarkable movement orchestrated by Ethiopians residing both domestically and abroad, who collectively raised their voices to defend the project in every possible forum.

According to Ambassador Fitsum, the diaspora serves as a mirror reflecting the prevailing sentiment within Ethiopia.

"The people were on his side until the end of the victory, becoming the owners of the dam," he stated, underscoring the shared sense of ownership and determination that propelled the project forward.

The spirit of possibility witnessed at Adwa, now mirrored in the Nile River’s potential, stems directly from the construction of the Renaissance Dam, Ambassador Fitsum explained.

He highlighted the historical context, noting that colonial rule and economic pressures had previously enabled Egypt to exert undue influence over the Nile River. This resulted in Ethiopia, the river's source, facing injustice and restricted access to its own resources.

However, due to decisive leadership and unwavering national resolve, Ethiopia has triumphed over these challenges, reaching a monumental milestone. Ambassador Fitsum declared that achieving such a significant victory independently is a feat unparalleled worldwide.

He concluded by emphasising the deep-seated patriotism of Ethiopians abroad, stating, "Ethiopians living abroad and Ethiopians born abroad carry their country in their hearts," adding that this shared love for their homeland is the unifying force that binds the entire Ethiopian nation together.
