Ethiopia Celebrates Pagume with Themed Days of Unity, Progress

Sep 02, 2025

Ethiopia is embracing the unique, five-day period of Pagume, the final days of its calendar year, with a series of themed celebrations designed to foster national unity and highlight significant governmental achievements. The initiative, led by the federal government, aims to inspire citizens to align their personal goals for the new year with broader national development objectives.

According to Minister of the Government Communication Service, Legesse Tulu (PhD), the past year (2017) saw remarkable progress despite various challenges. He pointed to the near completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), improved infrastructure in Addis Ababa, boosted industrial production, and a successful nationwide greening campaign as key accomplishments.

A Week of Reflection and Renewal

The Pagume celebrations are structured around daily themes, each reflecting a core value or achievement.

Day of Perseverance: Kicking off the festivities, the first day, known as the "Day of Perseverance," honored the sacrifices made to protect Ethiopia's freedom and national pride. It served as a tribute to the country’s enduring honor, built on a strong foundation of unity and resilience.

Day of Diversity (Hiber Day): The second and third days were dedicated to "Hiber Day," under the theme "Diversity is the Jewel of Ethiopia." This two-day event focused on strengthening national unity by celebrating the rich diversity of the Ethiopian people. Communities were encouraged to share meals and support students and resource centers.

Day of Achievement: The fourth day of Pagume was designated the "Day of Achievement." It recognized the significant progress made across various sectors, including agriculture, industry, mining, tourism, and government revenue, which for the first time was counted in trillions. Minister Legesse Tulu highlighted the Green Legacy Program's role in environmental protection and food sovereignty, noting that the country is now exporting a variety of fruits in addition to its renowned coffee.

Day of Regeneration: The final Pagume day was celebrated as the "Day of Regeneration," with the theme "Sustainable Development for National Regeneration." This day acknowledged Ethiopia's shift from a period of stagnation to one of renewal, laying the groundwork for future hope and transformative change. It showcased landmark projects like the GERD, the Green Legacy Initiative, and Corridor Development as key examples of the nation's resurgence.

As Ethiopia prepares to enter the new year, these themed Pagume days serve as a powerful reminder of the nation's collective journey and a catalyst for future progress and unity.
