Addis Ababa Fights Inflation with New Market Strategy

Sep 03, 2025

The Addis Ababa city administration is tackling artificial inflation head-on by increasing the supply of goods and creating a more efficient marketplace for consumers and producers, Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced today.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2018 New Year trade, exhibition, and bazaar, Mayor Adanech stated that the city is working to create a better trading system by enabling producers to sell their products directly to the public at fair prices. The event, held at the African Union Market Center, was attended by Deputy Mayor Jantrar Abay and other senior officials.

Mayor Adanech also highlighted that several recently inaugurated market centers would now operate year-round, not just during holidays. She urged consumers to visit these locations to avoid unfair price hikes and called on producers to utilize the centers to offer their goods at reasonable costs.

The holiday bazaar is currently underway at various locations, including market centers at the African Union and 4 Kilo Chilot, as well as in all sub-cities. Shoppers can find a wide range of agricultural, industrial, and holiday-related items at affordable prices.

Echoing the Mayor's sentiments, Jantrar Abay emphasized that the market centers are designed for consistent trade, encouraging both producers and consumers to make them their regular shopping destination.
