PM Abiy Ahmed Pushes for Cleaner Air, Modernized Cities

Sep 05, 2025

In a recent address, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed highlighted a significant environmental challenge facing Ethiopia: the country's air quality is being compromised by a large number of old, polluting vehicles.

Dr. Abiy emphasized the urgent need to address this issue, calling for a focused effort to improve or replace cars that emit harmful gases, particularly in urban areas. He stressed that a cleaner, more breathable city environment is crucial not only for public health but also for the nation's economic future.

The Prime Minister also outlined a vision for a more modern and prosperous capital. He insisted that the city must be transformed into a hub for tourism, finance, and technology. This includes a push to develop more high-quality infrastructure, such as malls and hotels, to attract and accommodate international visitors.

"The work that has begun to make the city livable, with lots of economic activity, where people can come and go, and where they can work and profit, will continue to be strengthened," the Prime Minister stated. This ongoing effort aims to create a dynamic and appealing urban center, ensuring it becomes a key driver of both local and national growth.
