Ethiopia Deepens Ties with Caribbean Nations at Africa-CARICOM Summit

Sep 08, 2025

Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, has been actively strengthening his country's diplomatic and cooperative relationships with several Caribbean nations. On the sidelines of the Second Africa-CARICOM Summit, Gedion held separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Grenada, the Bahamas, and Barbados.

During a meeting with Grenadian Foreign Minister Joseph Andall, the two leaders emphasized the need to move beyond historical ties between Africa and the Caribbean and to focus on practical cooperation that would benefit both regions. The discussions centered on expanding collaboration in various fields, including health, diplomacy, human resources, and aviation.

In a separate meeting, Minister Gedion and his Bahamian counterpart, Frederick Audley Mitchell Jr., signed a formal agreement to establish diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. A similar agreement was also signed with the Republic of Barbados. These agreements mark a significant step in formalizing and deepening Ethiopia's connections with the Caribbean.
