Ethiopia Files Formal Complaint with FIFA Over Egypt Match

Sep 08, 2025

The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the recent World Cup qualifying match against Egypt. The complaint outlines two key issues concerning the behavior of Egyptian fans during the game.

The EFF's letter to FIFA's Disciplinary Committee highlights that during the Ethiopian national anthem, Egyptian supporters engaged in disruptive and disrespectful chanting. Additionally, the complaint states that fans used laser pointers, a device strictly prohibited by FIFA, to distract players. The letter specifically notes that the lasers were aimed at goalkeeper Abubeker Nurah during penalty kicks, causing him to lose his focus.

The Ethiopian federation argues that these actions violate FIFA’s Disciplinary Code. It is urging FIFA to investigate the incidents and hold the Egyptian Football Association accountable for the unacceptable conduct of its fans, in line with the organization's regulations.
