"Medemer" Government: A Uniquely Ethiopian Blueprint for Change

Sep 22, 2025

Dr. Fitsum Assefa, the Minister of Planning and Development, and philosopher Dr. Dagnachew Assefa offered a comprehensive look at Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s latest book, "The Medemer Government." They asserted that the book is rooted in Ethiopia's current reality and proposes a uniquely Ethiopian political model.

Dr. Fitsum explained that the book, the fourth in a series, provides a historical overview of the nation's modern statehood. It explores Ethiopia's progress and setbacks, analyzing past strengths and weaknesses to inform the path forward. She emphasized that the books are interconnected, suggesting that every generation has contributed to the nation’s present state and that a new generation is needed to mend its divisions. According to Dr. Fistum, "The Medemer Government" serves as a practical blueprint for implementing the "Medemer" philosophy.

The minister also highlighted that the book details how Ethiopia's political, social, and economic systems have been historically "hijacked by money," which has left politics without a clear vision. She explained that the "Medemer" philosophy aims to correct this by promoting a political market driven by ideas rather than personal gain. The book's core message, she noted, is that the country must first ask the right questions before it can find the right answers, challenging traditional views on work, culture, and governance to create a better nation.

Dr. Dagnachew supported this view, adding that the philosophy does not claim to be the sole correct answer. He emphasized that the philosophy rejects the idea of a single, correct narrative and is open to being challenged with evidence, asserting that "Medemer" does not claim its ideas are complete or beyond critique.
