Ethiopia's Athletics Team Returns from Tokyo with Four Medals

Sep 23, 2025

Ethiopia's athletics delegation has returned to Addis Ababa after concluding its participation in the 20th World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.

The team received a warm welcome upon its arrival at Bole International Airport from distinguished officials, including Minister of Culture and Sports Shewit Shanka and President of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis, among other sports sector leaders.

The championships, which concluded on September 21, 2025, saw Ethiopia secure a total of four medals: two silver and two bronze.

Silver medals were claimed by Tigist Assefa in the women's marathon and Yomif Kejelcha in the men's 10,000 meters.

Bronze medals were won by Gudaf Tsegay in the women's 10,000 meters and Sembo Alemayehu in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

While Ethiopia's medal haul placed the country 22nd overall among the competing nations, the championship marks a historic first in 34 years, as the team returns from the World Athletics Championships without a single gold medal.
