Ethiopia's Minister of Planning and Development, Dr. Fitsum Assefa, stated that the government has successfully navigated a major economic reform despite global apprehension. During a "Ye medemer Weg" discussion, she used a powerful metaphor, stating, "we have managed to cross the river by taking the bull by its horns without wavering, even though the world was afraid."
The minister explained that until a strong private sector fully develops, the government will continue to play a crucial role as an "active investor" in strategic sectors. This approach has already led to significant achievements in areas like tourism, energy, roads, and telecommunications. According to Dr. Fitsum, the Medemer government's strategy is not to categorize the private sector but to actively foster its strength while using its own investment power to fix longstanding economic breakdowns.
