Ethiopia's President Highlights GERD's Contribution to UN Goals at General Assembly

President Taye Atskeselassie of Ethiopia and the President of the 80th UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, discussed pressing global issues, with a particular focus on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The President of Ethiopia used the opportunity to highlight the dam's role in promoting sustainable development. He emphasized that the GERD directly contributes to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. He argued that projects like GERD not only serve national development but also foster regional and global cooperation.

President Taye stressed the importance of strengthening collective efforts to uphold the principles of multilateralism and shared security, a point that resonated with the UNGA President. For her part, President Baerbock underlined the critical need to respect the principles of the UN Charter to ensure global peace and development. The discussion also included other key topics such as Ethiopia's national development and regional peace and security.
