Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) addressed the International Atomic Forum, outlining Ethiopia's strategic move to embrace nuclear energy as a catalyst for greater participation in the fields of artificial intelligence, industry, and innovation.
He described Ethiopia as a nation at a critical moment, marked by a dynamic youth population, modernizing cities, expanding industries, and one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
The Prime Minister highlighted Ethiopia's long-standing commitment to green development, with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)—Africa's largest—standing as a testament to the country's resolve. He underscored a vision that looks beyond immediate needs to transform the nation for generations to come.
Characterizing nuclear technology as an "opportunity," Prime Minister Abiy emphasized its diverse benefits. He assured the audience that Ethiopia would pursue this technology responsibly, with meticulous planning, adherence to the highest safety standards, and by building strong domestic capabilities.
He reiterated that nuclear power represents a strategic step for Ethiopia to become an active player in AI, industry, and innovation.
Crediting Russia for demonstrating what can be achieved when scientific vision is realized, the Prime Minister expressed Ethiopia's eagerness to strengthen its partnership with the nation. "By combining their experience with our skilled workforce and growing market," he said, "we aim to create a collaborative model that invigorates our country and our continent."
He asserted that nuclear power is vital for securing long-term development, diversifying energy sources, and unlocking Ethiopia's full potential. With a population exceeding 130 million, he stressed that the nation cannot afford to delay its pursuit of this technology.
"Our objective is clear: a safe, transparent, and exemplary nuclear program," he stated. "This is why we have chosen to carefully utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, in accordance with global standards."
"We are building institutions, training talent, and shaping a future where nuclear power strengthens our sovereignty, supports our growth, and serves the next generation," he added.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister conveyed that by working together, aspirations can be transformed into achievements and challenges into opportunities. He extended his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
