PM Abiy Ahmed Uses Meskel Holiday to Deliver Powerful Message on 'Ethiopia's Unburiable Truth'

Sep 26, 2025

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) used his annual Meskel holiday message to deliver a deeply symbolic address, drawing a direct analogy between the discovery of the True Cross and the eventual triumph of Ethiopia's national truth and prosperity.

In his message marking the Demera and Meskel holidays, the prime minister centered his theme on the idea that "the truth is never buried." He invoked the historical context of the Cross, which was buried and forgotten, leading some to lose hope, until "strong people, truth-seekers" emerged to "clear the dust and lift the refuse," allowing the Cross to be recovered.

"The truth is never buried," the Prime Minister stated. "When the time comes, it will clear the dust and reveal its mark. It will make the lies vanish like mist and elevate the truth to stand solid as a rock."

Applying this spiritual metaphor to the national context, he declared, "The truth of Ethiopia is similar." He continued the analogy by stating that just as the crowing of roosters or the wings of night bats cannot prevent the sun from rising, Ethiopia’s truth "will pierce through the dust, excavate the soil, demolish the refuse, and be revealed." He added, "Those who pierced her will see her... and be astonished by her from below."

The address culminated in a national call to action, focused on achieving prosperity through collective effort. "Guided by the bonfire of Medemer (synergy/coming together), and by digging with diligence, we will bring forth Ethiopia's prosperity," the Prime Minister affirmed. He concluded with a hopeful prediction for the year ahead: "This year will be one where we witness the light of Ethiopia emerge."

The message concluded with traditional well-wishes for a blessed holiday and a prayer for the nation: "May Ethiopia live long and forever respected and honored by the efforts of its children! May God bless Ethiopia and its people!"
