Ethiopia and the European Union (EU) have elevated their long-standing friendship by signing the 'Global Gateway' Partnership Agreement, marking the start of a new chapter in their relationship.
The agreement was formally signed by President Taye Atske Selassie and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The 'Global Gateway' Partnership is designed to boost cooperation and investment in several critical sectors, including digitalization, renewable energy, agri-food systems (agricultural production supply chains), health, sustainable infrastructure, and peace and security.
Prior to the signing, the two leaders held a bilateral discussion focused on strengthening the Ethiopia-EU relationship and expanding their cooperation for mutual benefit, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
President Taye Atske Selassie stated during the event that this agreement is a timely arrangement intended to solidify a shared strategic vision and forge a more resilient partnership between Ethiopia and the European Union.
The signing is considered a crucial step, elevating diplomatic relations that span over half a century to a higher level. It was also noted that the agreement will advance the Joint Strategic Engagement agreement that Ethiopia and the EU established in 2016.
