In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Finance confirmed that a new pay increase will be implemented for every government employee across Ethiopia.
Finance Minister Ahmed Shide stated that the government is fully committed to helping citizens cope with the rising cost of living. He highlighted the government's decision to implement the pay raise starting this September, noting it as a clear sign of their dedication. According to the minister, this significant increase will be funded by an additional 160 billion Birr in the budget and is specifically designed to support low-income workers.
Dr. Mekuria Haile, the Civil Service Commissioner, added that a fair living wage is essential for employees to be more productive and to deliver efficient services. While he acknowledged a previous raise in the last fiscal year, he explained that the new increase was determined using a more scientific method to ensure it is proportional to the current economic situation.
The commissioner also urged government employees to perform their duties with integrity and effectiveness, emphasizing that the reforms will continue until all government workers have reached a middle-income level.
