Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) today inaugurated the first phase of a modern logistics center expansion in Modjo, marking a major milestone in Ethiopia’s push to advance the African Continental Free Trade Area and strengthen regional economic integration.

The newly expanded 60-hectare hub is designed to handle up to one million 20-foot containers annually. Powered by Ethiopia’s first-ever Rail-Mounted Gantry crane, the fully digital facility enables the domestic packaging of dry bulk cargo, a key capability expected to conserve foreign currency while creating local employment opportunities.

The logistics center serves as a critical link in the DESSU Corridor, connecting Ethiopia with South Sudan and Uganda to bolster regional supply chains.

Highlighting the project’s strategic importance, Prime Minister Abiy noted that the state-of-the-art facility will reinforce Ethiopia’s standing in global logistics while expanding trade capacity for both the nation and the broader continent.
