PM Abiy Ahmed: Leadership Must Be Based on Knowledge, Experience

Aug 20, 2025

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) emphasized that true leadership is a wisdom that must be built on tangible knowledge and practical experience.

Speaking about his new book, "The Medemer State," the Prime Minister addressed a range of topics, stating that while the desire to lead is a natural ambition, it must not be an empty one. He stressed that a genuine ambition for leadership requires a solid foundation of real-world knowledge and lived experience.

He criticized the notion that one can become a leader simply by observing others. "Saying 'so-and-so became a leader, so I will, too,' is an empty wish," he said. He insisted that leadership demands substantive alternative ideas, concrete policies, intellectual strength, and a deep understanding of the people. He also stated that one cannot aspire to lead by merely discrediting the work of the current government.

Leading a nation like Ethiopia, which has the second-largest population in Africa and the tenth-largest in the world, requires significant self-preparation and capability, the Prime Minister added.

He noted that a government must begin with a concrete vision that demands extensive work, from policy drafting to implementation and, ultimately, a review of the results. According to the Prime Minister, his book, "The Medemer State," serves as a prime example of this process.

Concluding his remarks, he urged the youth to start preparing for leadership now by working hard, assuring them that with diligence, nothing is impossible.
