Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD) held bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India.
During their discussion, Prime Minister Abiy expressed appreciation for Russia's support in securing Ethiopia’s BRICS membership. He noted that ties between the two nations have gained significant momentum, particularly across defense, trade, investment, and education.
President Putin affirmed that Ethiopia remains a long-standing and reliable partner for Russia in Africa.
Extending his greetings to Prime Minister Abiy and the people of Ethiopia for the 2019 Ethiopian New Year, President Putin welcomed Ethiopia’s full entry into BRICS during Russia’s chairmanship, highlighting that bilateral relations built on equality and mutual benefit continue to yield positive results.
He specifically pointed out that trade volume between the two countries tripled in 2025 and that over 20,000 Ethiopian students have completed their education in Russia, laying a robust foundation for future cooperation.
President Putin also extended an official invitation to Prime Minister Abiy to attend the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled for October 28–29 in Moscow.
