Completion of Renaissance Dam Heralds New Chapter of Cooperation, Says Senior Hydrologist

Aug 21, 2025

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a historic achievement for Ethiopia and will open a new era of collaboration among Nile Basin nations, according to a senior hydrologist.

Engineer Getu Biftu, a senior hydrologist based in Alberta, Canada, said the completion of Africa's largest power generation project represents a significant step forward not only for Ethiopia but also for regional cooperation, according to ENA.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had previously announced to the House of People's Representatives in June 2025 that the dam, built with great effort and sacrifice, is scheduled for inauguration in September. He extended an invitation to all basin countries to attend the event, urging them to witness the practical realization of mutual benefit.
