Ethiopia’s research-driven strategy to boost wheat production offers a transformative model for the entire African continent, according to the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).

The organization highlighted the country's achievements during an international workshop in Addis Ababa focused on scaling agricultural technologies and strengthening national seed systems to drive sustainable wheat transformation across Africa.

While Africa possesses vast reserves of arable land capable of growing vital staples like wheat, maize, and cassava to achieve food security, changing climate patterns continue to test the agricultural sector. Experts at the workshop noted that despite ongoing improvements in crop yields, the continent still faces significant hurdles in broadly deploying crop varieties capable of enduring rising temperatures, severe drought, and plant diseases.

Against this backdrop, Ethiopia’s rapid surge in wheat productivity stands out as an exemplary path forward. By breaking its historic reliance on seasonal rainfall and expanding summer irrigation across millions of hectares, the nation successfully achieved self-sufficiency in wheat production within a short timeframe.

According to ICARDA, this milestone was made possible through a deliberate combination of strong policy direction, scientific research, and active private-sector participation in the agricultural ecosystem.
