The Ethiopian Media Authority has called on media outlets to make peace a core part of their mission, framing it as a matter of national interest.

"It is a media outlet's duty to make peace its primary mission and vision," said Dr. Samson Mekonnen, the Authority's Director-General. He observed that media has not traditionally devoted extensive airtime to peace reporting, suggesting the need for a dedicated "peace journalist" role in the country.

According to Dr. Samson, licenses are issued to media organizations with the expectation that they will contribute to peace. He also highlighted the establishment of a Media Center of Excellence, built to enhance the capacity of the sector.

The remarks were made during a discussion between the Ethiopian Media Authority and various media stakeholders regarding the launch of the new center.
