Public office is a duty to serve the public rather than a gateway for personal enrichment, Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie declared during the government formation and fourth opening session of the city council. Addressing the assembly, the Mayor emphasized that the administration has committed to gauging its performance through tangible improvements in citizens' daily lives rather than relying on numerical paper reports.
To safeguard public resources, Mayor Adanech announced plans to establish a strict framework enforcing zero tolerance for theft and corruption over the coming years. She highlighted that extensive initiatives will be undertaken to align the capital with the broader Digital Ethiopia 2030 vision, accelerating reforms to fully digitize public service delivery and spare residents from bureaucratic delays and distress.
Easing the daily cost-of-living pressure on residents stands as the primary focus for the administration's next five-year term. This will be supported by targeted interventions to stabilize the macroeconomy, particularly by eliminating illegal brokers and market manipulators from the commercial system.
Alongside economic stabilization, the Mayor outlined strategic measures to help citizens transition from aid reliance to active productivity. Key priorities include expanding job opportunities for youth and women while fostering micro and small enterprises, steps she affirmed will ultimately realize the vision of transforming Addis Ababa into a true hub of prosperity.
