A delegation of Israeli medical specialists has arrived in Addis Ababa to deliver comprehensive advanced anesthesia training to approximately 100 Ethiopian doctors and medical staff. The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Embassy of Israel in Ethiopia, MASHAV (Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation), the JDC, and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, aims to strengthen critical care capabilities within the Addis Ababa area’s hospitals.
The training, currently underway at the ALERT Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, focuses on vital aspects of modern anesthesia practice. Participants will receive instruction in anesthesia techniques, advanced airway management, spinal protocols, intensive care unit (ICU) procedures, and trauma and emergency protocols. The intensive course seeks to improve patient outcomes and bolster the skills of local medical professionals in handling complex and critical medical situations.
This project is part of an enduring partnership between the JDC and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, geared towards enhancing the overall health system, restoring healthcare facilities, and building local capacity. The partnership identifies areas where expertise and resources are needed most, and coordinates the implementation of programs that address the specific challenges.
Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia, Avraham Neguise, underscored the importance of this collaborative effort at the course’s opening ceremony, highlighting the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations. "Even in difficult times, medical experts from Israel continue to come to Ethiopia for programs in capacity building, the provision of free medical care, and strengthening the long-term partnerships with their Ethiopian colleagues," he stated. His words emphasize Israel's ongoing commitment to support Ethiopia's development through humanitarian aid and knowledge exchange.
Beyond the vital training program, the visiting Israeli team generously donated essential medical and diagnostic equipment. This equipment, designed to enhance proper ICU management, will directly aid local teams in providing high-quality care to critically ill patients. This tangible contribution will improve the ability of Ethiopian healthcare professionals to deliver life-saving interventions.
MASHAV and the Embassy of Israel have affirmed their commitment to continuing such initiatives, recognising them as a powerful demonstration of the unique and enduring ties between Israel and Ethiopia. The collaboration reflects a shared vision of progress and a dedication to improving healthcare outcomes in Ethiopia through the transfer of knowledge and the provision of essential resources. The ongoing commitment signals continued support for future projects designed to elevate Ethiopian healthcare standards, according to the Israeli Embassy in Ethiopia.
