Press Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia
As the source of the Abay River, widely known as the Blue Nile, Ethiopia emphasizes that virtually all of the river's waters originate within its highlands. Because the Abay contributes approximately 85 percent of the Nile River's total flow, it is imperative that any discussions regarding the utilization and management of the river remain firmly grounded in these fundamental realities.
In a similar vein, Ethiopia shares a profound geographic and historical connection to the Red Sea. Despite shifting political boundaries over time, the nation remains intimately linked to this vital maritime corridor, with its nearest border situated barely 30 miles from the coast. Consequently, any serious dialogue concerning regional maritime affairs and security architecture must fully account for Ethiopia's legitimate interests and its enduring ties to the Red Sea.
These geographic and historical truths cannot be altered by political rhetoric, coercive measures, or deliberate acts of destabilization. Actions carried out through proxies or outright aggression will neither change the facts on the ground nor diminish Ethiopia's rightful interests, roles, and responsibilities within the region.
While remaining fully prepared to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and core national interests, Ethiopia continues to pursue a path of peaceful engagement, mutual respect, and regional cooperation. The nation urges all regional actors to abandon confrontation and zero-sum strategies, calling instead for shared challenges to be addressed through constructive dialogue, genuine partnership, and a steadfast commitment to the principles of good neighborliness.
