African Union, Horn of Africa Leaders Back PM Abiy Ahmed Following Re-Election

The President of Burundi and current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Évariste Ndayishimiye has extended a formal congratulatory message to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) following his re-election. Speaking on behalf of the people of Burundi and the African Union, the president expressed profound joy and wished the prime minister complete success in his new term in office. In his message, the Chairperson shared his firm hope that the Ethiopian people will achieve sustainable growth, unity, and prosperity as the country strives toward its strategic goals. He further reaffirmed the African Union's strong commitment to collaborating with the Ethiopian government and its people to ensure lasting peace, regional integration, close cooperation, and shared economic development across both Ethiopia and the broader African continent.

In a corresponding gesture of support, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), expressed deep satisfaction in congratulating Dr. Abiy on his election to lead the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for an additional five years. Emphasizing Ethiopia's unique role as the headquarters of the African Union and the diplomatic capital of the continent, the Chairperson noted the nation's special place within the African family. He confirmed his strong desire to work closely with the prime minister and his cabinet to advance Africa's broader agendas of integration, peace, security, and development.

Adding his voice to the regional commendations, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, congratulated Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed on his reappointment. Through a message shared on social media, the Somali president extended his best wishes, expressing hope that the prime minister will successfully fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him in his new mandate. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud highlighted a shared desire to further strengthen bilateral relations between Somalia and Ethiopia. He assured continued close cooperation with Ethiopia to secure lasting peace, stability, and mutual prosperity for the citizens of both nations and the wider Horn of Africa region.

Joining the regional figures offering support, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi "Cirro," the sixth President of Somaliland, conveyed his sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed on his re-election. Pointing to the longstanding ties between Somaliland and Ethiopia rooted in geography, history, and shared interests, President Cirro noted his eagerness to work with the Prime Minister to deepen cooperation, promote regional peace and stability, and expand trade and economic opportunities.
