Ethiopia Sets Sights on Civilizational Renewal Beyond Everyday Needs

Oct 06, 2026 907

Essential services like jobs, electricity, housing, and clean water are vital steps, but building a new Ethiopian civilization remains the ultimate fix for the country’s long-term challenges. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) called for a dramatic expansion of the national mindset, warning that focusing narrowly on local or village-level disputes makes minor problems appear massive. Comparing a restricted perspective to a fish swimming in a small pond, he urged citizens to replace narrow views with an expansive global outlook and prepare for grander national goals.

PM Abiy pointed out that despite its rich history and immense natural resources, Ethiopia was historically trapped in poverty due to endless internal friction, where one generation built only for the next to tear it down. To break this cycle, he stressed that Ethiopia must join the international community as a strong, self-governing force that shapes world events without losing its core identity, much like the Nile River running pure from its source before merging into the Mediterranean Sea.

Achieving lasting renewal requires blending centuries of Ethiopian political and social inheritance with valuable ideas from abroad, using the Medemer framework to guide progress. Closing out his remarks to lawmakers following his reappointment, PM Abiy concluded that real national victory will come not from standing still or settling for basic infrastructure, but from uniting around a grand civilizational vision and executing it through relentless work.
