Ethiopia’s Hydropower Investments, Green Legacy Initiative Receive Acclamation

Ethiopia’s hydropower development investments and the success of Green Legacy Initiative received Germany’s acclamation.

The acclamation came as Germany’s State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action, Jennifer Lee Morgan and Ethiopian State Minister for Planning and Development, Seyoum Mekonnen conferred on strengthening cooperation on climate change prevention.

The two sides stressed on mutual commitment to Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) where renewable energy development and enhancing energy accessibility is key area of intervention.

Jennifer Lee Morgan appreciated the colossal investment Ethiopia is making on such hydro power projects as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the Koysha Hydropower project; these could raise access to energy in the country.

She also acclaimed the success and sustainability of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative for its significant contribution to sustainability and the effectiveness of its projects during the meeting.

She further extended Germany’s interest in supporting Ethiopia’s ambitious renewable energy initiatives.

While the collaboration on NDC and Climate Finance took center stage during discussions, the two sides have also exchanged views on Ethiopia’s forthcoming updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) expected in 2025, with plans outlined for reviewing of the achievements and shortfalls of the existing NDC.

Moreover, the two sides agreed to heighten cooperation to speed up  climate action and attain their mutual interests.
