Wollo Kombolcha Airport Expansion Inaugurated, Boosting Regional Connectivity

The expanded Wollo Kombolcha Airport has officially begun operations following an inauguration ceremony, marking a significant step for the region's infrastructure. The expansion project, led by Ethiopian Airlines Group, was completed at a cost of more than 1.8 billion Birr.

The project included a new passenger terminal and building, which increases the airport’s capacity to accommodate over 320 people at a time. The modernized facility, now covering 3,500 hectares of land, aims to enhance services and facilitate economic activity.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Mohammedamin Yusuf highlighted the strategic importance of the upgrade. "The construction of the airport to a high standard will create greater momentum for the industrial city of Kombolcha," he said.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, stated that the company is allocating significant investment to modernize and expand domestic airports. "This will enable us to provide efficient and high-quality service to our passengers," he added.

Arega Kebede, Head of the Amhara Regional Administration, emphasized the airport's role in the region's development. "The modernization of the Wollo Kombolcha Airport plays a significant role in facilitating investment and tourism activities at both the regional and national levels," he said. He also stressed that sustainable development can only be achieved in the presence of lasting peace, urging all residents to take ownership of its protection.

Ethiopian Airlines Group currently serves 22 domestic destinations and noted that an additional six new airports are under construction as part of its ongoing expansion efforts across the country.
